@Mjeshi-nakubaliana kabisa nauliyosema

Tanzanian peacekeepers bombed in Lebanon
MASATO MASATO & AGENCIES
Dar es Salaam
SIX Tanzanian army officers on a peacekeeping mission in Lebanon on Sunday escaped death after being targeted by bombs in the troubled Middle East country.
The Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mr Bernard Membe, confirmed to THISDAY yesterday that Tanzanian soldiers had just parked their vehicle at a Lebanese checkpoint when a landmine exploded.
Membe said that save for minor damages to the UN four-wheel drive vehicle in which the Tanzanians were travelling, there were no casualties.
’’All our soldiers are fine,’’ he stated.
The attacked soldiers are part of a contingent of 80 military policemen from Tanzania currently on a peacekeeping mission in Lebanon.
It was earlier reported by international media agencies that the blast detonated near the Qasmiyeh bridge on the main coastal road north of Tyre, where the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has an observation post.
’’We can confirm that an explosion occurred in the area of Qasmiyeh bridge involving one of our vehicles,’’ UNIFIL deputy spokeswoman Ms Yasmina Bouziane was quoted as saying.
She also affirmed that no casualties had been reported from the incident.
Just last month, a car bomb blast killed six members of UNIFIL’s Spanish battalion in the south of the country. No group claimed responsibility for the June 24 attack but the Spanish government said it suspected it was the work of al Qaeda-inspired Islamist militants.
The UNIFIL has grown to 13,300 troops and naval personnel from 31 countries under a UN security council resolution that halted last year’s conflict between Israel and Lebanese Hezbollah guerrillas.
The UNIFIL troops operate alongside some 15,000 Lebanese soldiers deployed in the south after the July?August war.
Tanzania joined the peace keeping mission in Lebanon last February with the Tanzania People’s Defence Forces (TPDF) sending 80 officers, including 10 women.
Seeing off the officers on February 7, the Chief of Defence Forces, General George Waitara, urged them to adhere to professional soldier ethics while on the international assignment.
Minister Membe said yesterday that the Tanzanian troops were on a six-month assignment in Lebanon which is, however, subject to situational changes.
The six months will elapse next month, but the minister said he was not sure whether the soldiers would be immediately called back or told to stay on.
